What is a 3 way globe valve and how does it work?

update image

A 3-way globe valve is a type of industrial valve that has three openings (ports). These ports are usually called • Port A • Port B • Port C The valve controls how fluid (water, steam, oil, etc.) flows between these three ports. It is mainly used for: • Mixing two fluids into one line • Diverting one fluid into two different lines How Does a 3-Way Globe Valve Work? Inside the valve, there is a globe-shaped plug that moves up and down. This plug decides which port is open and which port is closed. There are two main working modes: 1. Mixing Mode (Two Inlets → One Outlet) • Fluid enters from Port A • Fluid enters from Port B • Both mix inside the valve • Mixed fluid goes out from Port C This is used when you want to control temperature, such as mixing hot and cold water. 2. Diverting Mode (One Inlet → Two Outlets) • Fluid enters from Port A • Valve plug directs flow to Port B or Port C • Or splits flow between both This is used when you want to send fluid to two different lines. Why is it Called a “Globe” Valve? Because the internal body shape looks like a globe (round chamber) and the plug moves vertically to control flow. Advantages of a 3-Way Globe Valve • Very good flow control • Suitable for mixing and diverting • Works well with water, steam, oil, chemicals • Strong sealing • Long life and easy maintenance Where is it Used? • HVAC systems (hot/cold water mixing) • Chemical plants • Steam control • Oil & gas • Water treatment • Industrial process control Valves are the heart of industrial piping systems—from globe valves to control valves, every design engineer must master their selection, sizing, and application. Whether you're working on chemical plants, oil & gas pipelines, water treatment facilities, or HVAC systems, valve knowledge is essential for safe and efficient plant design. To learn valves in depth—including 2-way, 3-way, actuated, manual, and pressure control valves—join Petromech Institute, one of the most trusted and top-rated engineering training institutes in India. We offer full-time, hands-on training programs for both working professionals and fresh engineering graduates, covering piping design, instrumentation, process control, and plant layout. Our expert-led sessions include real-world case studies, industrial drawings, and practical valve selection techniques used in EPC projects and plant commissioning. If you're serious about becoming a skilled piping engineer or plant designer, Petromech Institute is your gateway to success.
